Juniors and Youth

NEW for 2026 – Whole of Football 2.0

In late 2025 New Zealand Football unveiled its updated Whole of Football Framework 2.0, evolving the way football and futsal are delivered which comes into effect now. Among the changes are updated game formats and structures designed to foster a lifelong love of football and prioritise skill development from an early age.
Research shows that playing smaller formats of the game for longer significantly increases involvement in the game and touches on the ball for players which accelerates skill development and better prepares participants for the transition to 11 vs 11 football a year later at the U14 age group.
You’ll see from the tables below, the changes to team sizes to accommodate the aim of more touches on the ball. Of particular note, is the inclusion of U7s now in the First Kicks programme. Given the numbers in our First Kicks and U7s groups, it is still our intention to run the U7s sessions separately from the U4-U6s, with one training session per week and occasional inter-club days (dates TBC by Capital Football).

We have also increased the length of the season for our First Kicks (U4s-U6s) to start and end at the same time as the other junior grades (start week of 2 May, end 29 August) – exact week day TBC.

You can read more about the Whole of Football 2.0 plan on the Capital Football website and for more information about how it impacts each of our grades, please contact Jonathan Winkworth, jonathan@upperhuttcityfootball.org.nz

About the Talent Development Programme

Upper Hutt City Football’s Talent Development Programme (TDP) was established in 2020 in response to the phasing out of the Federation based Talent Centres by New Zealand Football and Capital Football. It was put in place to enable our ambitious and talented male and female youth footballers to continue to develop, grow and fulfil their potential on and off the field while remaining part of the UHCF footballing family. By establishing a TDP, Upper Hutt City Football can offer its players a New Zealand Football accredited development programme that is aligned with New Zealand Football’s playing philosophy and development pathway. It also allows these players to participate in the Capital Football administered Capital Development League (CDL) against the other TDP clubs.

To participate in this programme all you need to do is attend the TDP trials (mixed teams early February, Girls Only TBC).

TDP – What we want to achieve

Our mission as a club is to provide football for all which also encompasses providing a pathway for ambitious youth players to fulfil their potential. This will be done by providing top quality coaching and ensuring players understand what is required to be the best they can be, ensuring they have a strong technical base and well-rounded tactical knowledge to be able to adapt to the future game and the differing coaching and playing environments they are likely to find themselves in over the course of their footballing lives.
For more information about the Talent Development Programme, please contact Jonathan Winkworth, jonathan@upperhuttcityfootball.org.nz

Girls Only Sunday Leagues (Junior)

In previous years, Upper Hutt City Football has entered teams into the Capital Football Junior Girls Only Sunday Leagues. This allows our junior girls the option to play girls’ only, or to play both Mixed (on Saturdays) and Girls’ Only on Sundays.
For 2026, we will again be looking to enter teams in the junior Girls’ Only Sunday leagues (U9, U11, U13). Please indicate your preference on the registration form (girls only, mixed, both or no preference). There is no extra cost to play in both.

Worried about costs?

We’re keen to ensure that cost isn’t a barrier to people playing football. If you are experiencing genuine financial hardship, please take a look at the Football For All programme. This is an initiative delivered by Capital Football and the Wellington Phoenix to foster inclusion, participation and hauora by using football as a vehicle. The programme places tamariki and rangatahi from ages six to 17 into football clubs, futsal teams and school teams by removing potential barriers, such as registration costs, equipment needs, transport assistance and communication difficulties, to active play and recreation.

Please email us at playfootball@upperhuttcityfootball.org.nz if this is of interest to you and we can assist you with the application process. Please note, the Football For All applications are scheduled to open mid-February. If this isn’t an option, we may also be able to arrange payment plans for your fees. Please contact us in confidence, playfootball@upperhuttcityfootball.org.nz to discuss payment options.

Need more help?

If you’re unsure which programme is best for your junior or youth player and you wish to discuss your options, please contact: Jonathan Winkworth, jonathan@upperhuttcityfootball.org.nz

What your fees at UHCF cover

Registration fees contribute towards the cost of operating Upper Hutt City Football. These include (but are not limited to):

• Club equipment – balls, nets, shirts etc.
• Turf training and ground fees
• Prizegiving expenses – certificates, medal and trophies
• Funding towards tournaments fees
• Other costs relating to running the club, clubrooms and gear storage facilities

2026 Club Raffle/Donations

Registration fees only cover a proportion of the costs involved in operating a successful football club. Upper Hutt City Football is very much reliant on grant funding, sponsorship and fundraising to supplement the income generated from subscriptions. This year, we’re again looking to run a club raffle, but based on feedback from 2025, this will be run a little differently. We’d love our football family to support this fundraising initiative by helping us to sell tickets. Alternatively, we do offer a one-off Fundraising Donation of $20 on the registration form. Any additional support is very much appreciated, but of course you can choose to support both the raffle and make a donation, or neither. Funds raised through this initiative will be put towards the purchase of new training equipment. Any questions about this fundraiser, please contact Club Chairman, Tristan Elder, tristan@upperhuttcityfootball.org.nz

Red Flags

If you have a problem registering, it may be that you have been “red flagged” in the New Zealand Football registration system. You should have received an automated email explaining the reason for the red flag; unpaid fees, unreturned gear/equipment or both. If you believe this red flag has been issued in error or would like more information, please contact playfootball@upperhuttcityfootball.org.nz
